1. Ella decided to do cross country this year, which surprised us. She doesn't like running, even though she did track last year. She tried to just get away with doing the long jump, but ended up in a relay race at one of the meets when another girl couldn't run, and then ran the relay the rest of the season. But after not running all summer, they started cross country last week with a 3 mile run! She was exhausted. She's kept a good attitude though, and woke up today and noted that she wasn't sore anymore.
2. Eva hit the Pepsi sign at Grand Sierra Aqua Range. She was even trying to! She did not win a Pepsi however, because her ball did not stay in the bucket - what a rip off! She did get ice cream with Matt afterwards though. So the next generation of Hamrick golfers will include a girl who will undoubtedly make way too much noise while others are teeing off :)
3. As many of you know, Sophie struggles in school. She is 'learning disabled', and has never successfully completed even a simple spelling test. She tries her hardest in school and never complains in class, but when she gets home, she wants to unwind and not fry her brain anymore. So last Tuesday, when Matt asked for her homework, she cried. This happens a lot, and it's truly heart wrenching, because she's just tired of being wrong all the time, not understanding, and knowing her peers don't struggle as she does. Matt was going to work on her spelling with her and decided to use a different approach. This time he set her up on the computer to practice her words on Microsoft Word. Something about this was inspiring to her, and she took right to it. She did it all week long, and several times a day on her own, without our usual prodding. One time I noticed she was typing each word in a different color. Somehow, she was able to internalize her spelling words like never before. She'd never been so excited about her homework, and she even did her other work with more enthusiasm. So, drum roll please... Sophie's first ever completed spelling test was 100% correct!!!!!!!!! (she usually doesn't reverse her 'a')

Awesome for Sophie and props to Matt for trying a different approach. Parenting has got to be the most creative profession there is!

HOORAY Sophie!! It is so hard as a parent to see your kid suffering...I hope this method keeps working for her! And hooray for everyone else as well! Make sure to send some ear plugs when Eva plays Tiger!

Yeah for Sophie! I know what a great accomplishment that is since I have a creative speller living at my house also! Try having her do her spelling words in sand or with blocks too. That was something that worked for us! Congrats all around!
Your girls are all so sweet-Ella running 3 miles is very inspiring (I think I will try 3 tomorrow), Eva with her golfing makes me want to go, and YAY for Sophie doing so well on her spelling! What a great method for helping her learn!
I am SO excited for Sophie!! It's all in there, it's just so hard for her to get it out to show us!!!
She must of had some amazing tutoring in kindergarten!!
